In October 2011, Professor Camille Charles delivered the inaugural 2011-12 SCOPE Brown Bag Seminar, "Say it Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud?): Understanding the Racial Identities of Upwardly Mobile Black College Students." Before the lecture, Professor Charles sat down to discuss her latest research on the racial identities of Black students. Charles challenges the assumption of a homogenous Black identity and reveals some fascinating insights into what influences racial identity.
Charles is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Term Professor in the Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Center for Africana Studies. Her lecture was sponsored by SCOPE, the Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality, and the Stanford University School of Education Higher Education Program.
