The "Young, Gifted, and @ Risk" conference focuses on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people of color, particularly those on college campuses. It brings together mental health practitioners, higher education leaders, researchers, students, and non-profit organizations to explore the challenges to mental health and appropriate strategies and solutions to promote mental health of this population. The event is produced annually by the Steve Fund, an organization focused on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of students of color. For the 2015 conference, the Steve Fund has partnered with Stanford University, specifically, the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE), Stanford Medical School, and the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE).

The unique mental health needs of students of color are poorly understood and severely underserved. At this moment, there are students of color who are failing academically, suffering emotionally and/or in some cases facing serious risk, because population-specific factors influencing mental health are too poorly understood and not acted upon. Research shows that students of color are:

• Less likely to seek help when depressed.
• Nearly twice as likely to report feeling less emotionally prepared when they first started college compared to their peers.
• A third less likely to complete college.

Join us at this annual gathering of an emerging network of thought leaders as we explore innovative approaches leading to the enhanced support and wellbeing of students of color facing the challenges of academic environments.
